Procedures for Power Interruptions

If you experience a power outage the following steps should be taken:

  • Contact Cornwall Electric
    Please call us at 1‑844‑701‑9473 with your service address and any relevant details about the outage. Our phone lines may be busy if multiple customers are calling at the same time, so we appreciate your patience.
  • Allow time for diagnosis
    Outage information cannot be provided until our crews have assessed the situation. Once the issue is identified, we will share updates on the cause, the affected area, and the estimated time for restoration.
  • Call back if needed
    If your power has not been restored after some time, you may call us again for an update. For more details, please visit our 24‑Hour Emergency Service information.
     

Downed Power Lines

Fallen Lines

High winds, ice, and heavy snow can cause power lines to come down. Always stay far away from any downed power line, as it should be considered energized (“live”) and extremely dangerous.  For your safety:

  • Do not approach or drive over a downed power line. Do not touch anything the line may be in contact with, such as fences, vehicles, or trees. 
  • If a downed power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside the vehicle and wait for help to arrive. 
  • Parents are encourages to talk to their children about the dangers associated with power lines.

Be careful

We all depend on electricity every day, and nothing highlights this more than a power outage. When electricity is unavailable, many people turn to alternative sources for cooking, heating, and lighting. These alternatives can be hazardous if proper safety precautions are not followed. It’s also important to ensure you have working battery‑powered smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and to test them regularly. During a power failure, make sure you have at least one non‑cordless telephone available, as cordless phones will not operate without electricity.
