Stay Safe Around Powerlines
Whether you're building a deck, installing a fence, planting trees, or tackling other outdoor projects, keeping powerline safety in mind can help protect you, your family, and your property.
Keep Your Distance from Overhead Powerlines
Overhead powerlines carry high-voltage electricity and can be dangerous if you get too close. You do not need to touch a powerline to receive an electric shock. Electricity can "arc" or jump from a powerline to nearby people, tools, or equipment.
Always stay at least 3 metres away from overhead powerlines.
Click Before You Dig
Many powerlines and utility services are located underground and may not be visible from the surface. Before starting any project that involves digging—such as building a deck, planting trees, landscaping, or installing a fence - contact Ontario One Call to have underground utilities located and marked.
Taking this simple step can help prevent injuries, service disruptions, and costly repairs.
Stay Away from Downed Powerlines
If you see a downed powerline, always assume it is energized and extremely dangerous. Electricity can travel through the surrounding ground, creating a serious risk even if you do not touch the line directly. Stay at least 10 metres away, keep others away from the area, and report the hazard immediately.
Safety Starts with Awareness
A few simple precautions can make all the difference when working around powerlines. By maintaining safe distances, locating underground utilities before digging, and staying clear of downed lines, you can help keep yourself and your community safe.
