How To Read Your Meter
The following are step-by-step instructions to help you read your electric meter. Please refer to the diagram below when reading the instructions:

  1. Stand in front of the meter and start with the dial on the right.

  2. Record the number that the hand is pointing to. If the hand is pointed between two numbers, record the number the hand has just passed (this will be the lower number). Whenever the hand is between 9 and 0, use 9 as the lower number.

  3. Continue reading the dials from right to left. The hand on each dial moves in the opposite direction of the preceding dial - either clockwise or counterclockwise. Check the direction the hand is turning, and record the last number the hand has passed. You won't necessarily use the number the hand is closest to.

  4. If the hand appears to be directly on a number, check the dial to the right of the one you're reading to see if the hand has passed 0 and is headed toward 1. If the dial to the right hasn't passed 0, use the next lower number.
Meter Location
Your meter may be located almost anywhere inside or outside your home. If you are having difficulty locating your meter, follow along the power line from where it enters the building to help you find it.

If your meter has only 4 dials
The illustration above shows an electric meter with five dials. If your electric meter contains four dials, just record four numbers.
